The new Middlehurst Special School will become a successor school to two predecessor schools, Middlehurst School and Heathfield School.
The new school will be co-located on the same site as the new Ormiston Horizon Academy and will be designed to cater for 140 pupils aged 2-19 years with cognition and learning needs.
The new School will consist of six 'units', one each for early years foundation stage, primary aged moderate learning difficulties (MLD), secondary aged MLD, primary aged severe learning difficulties (SLD), secondary aged SLD and complex behaviour. Planned as a ribbon of classrooms around four internal courtyards within the school, each unit will be self contained but has been designed so that it can expand or contract into the adjacent unit as the needs of the student population changes.
In addition the school will have its own sports hall, specialist gym for students with profound and multiple learning difficulties and a small hydrotherapy pool facility.
